A documentary from 2018 looking at the Bitcoin phenomena as its price was declining: what is it, how does it work, and why is it still important if its value doesn’t hold?
Through a series of interviews with people involved in the industry all these questions get asked and answered, especially as most see Bitcoin as something much more than an investment, even if they profited from it.
The potential of decentralised trust systems, taking away power from 3rd party centralised trust systems of all sorts – think: banks, governments, corporations – is still the main “value” that cryptocurrencies have.
However, a very good point is made towards the end that the whole thing can be turned against the individual if all payment systems are controlled by the government, who can then remove people from control over their finances if they wish to (think of what is happening in China).
We have to build systems that cannot be hijacked in the way the internet has been, if we are to protect the freedoms and empowerment of the individual. This should be the main task for people in this movement at this point.
