This is a film from NRK in Norway (in English) about Edward Snowden, but it is somewhat different than many others, in that it doesn’t concentrate on the revelations so much as on his escape from Hong Hong where he was in danger of extradition and subsequent imprisonment in the USA.
The film does, of course, have to provide the background as to Snowden’s revelations, and as to why the US so desperately wanted to arrest him, but from there on it follows actors of both sides: the American intelligence agencies seeking his arrest, and WikiLeaks seeking his freedom and asylum.
Some of the most telling moments come towards the end of the film when the head of the NSA finally realises he was played by WikiLeaks into getting European powers to down Ecuadorian President Morales’ plane, which caused a diplomatic uproar and showed the Europeans up for the puppets they are, much to the disgust of their own people.
Such a grave overreach quite possibly also led to Snowden being granted asylum in Russia, where he still lives. He has applied for asylum in dozens of countries since, but it still has not been granted by any government, and he remains in exile.
