As we have seen in so many cases it is not the people who do wrong who get punished, but the people who blow the whistle on their wrongdoing. They often find themselves isolated personally and professionally and it also has an impact on their families.
This film from DW (Deutsche Welle) looks at a number of European whistleblowers, including Rudolf Elmer and Stephanie Giraud, who blew the whistle on the Swiss banking system, and Sven Ennullat, a German ex-police officer, told by the authorities to stop investigating right-wing groups he was charged with monitoring.
In each case they have suffered greatly, whereas the culprits have got off scot-free, with only minor damage from bad publicity. Sometimes they have been imprisoned, some have lost any chance of pursuing their career, some have faced threats to their security.
Sometimes they knew all of this would come about too, but treasuring the public good over their own good, they went ahead and spoke truth to power anyway. There really needs to be societal protection of whistleblowers and corrupt
